    Description

Here is an original US theatrical  lobby card (11" x 14") for the Warner Brothers release of their retitled version of Toho's Godzilla Raids Again, Gigantis, the Fire Monster (1959). While there's no mistaking the dorsal fins and toothy grin of Godzilla, between Warners' substitution of Anguirus' roar for Godzilla's, the removal of Masaru Sato's musical score for stock music, and the Toho cameraman's error of undercranking instead of overcranking the camera for some of the effects scenes this is largely considered a one-off by most fans. Although the black and white effects photography itself (without the undercranking of the camera) is great as demonstrated by these original stills, the film has a cursory storyline and none of the impact of the original. But it is historic in its breaking the ice (so to speak) in portraying the first kaiju battle ever filmed which when they are not in fast-motion are convincingly destructive.
Warner's poster art did its best to disguise Godzilla but didn't have to worry about Anguirus/Angilas because nobody in America apart from Famous Monsters and Castle of Frankenstein readers would know where that monster came from!
