    Description

I am offering  a leather briefcase that belonged to Robert J. Van Gemert who was an employee of Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory since August 27th, 1943.In the early days of Ebay I Auctioned many of the certificates belonging to Robert for attending many of the nuclear trial blasts After WWII during the cold war.  I had purchased many of Mr. Van Gemert’s nuclear history at his estate sale in Montrose, Co in the late 90’s.  The briefcase is a part of history,  you can tell the briefcase is 40’s vintage and was most likely Used by Robert during his work on the Manhattan Project, and used continually during his career at LASL.The case shows a lot of wear, leather has separated on the top flap and there is some broken stitching.   Please view all photos before bidding.  This is a true museum piece.  Pretty good shape for an almost 80 year item.Harry Allen and Robert Van Gemert worked in procurement at Los Alamos during the Manhattan Project. In this interview, the pair discusses getting ready for the Trinity test, the challenges of using Jumbo, and how materials were transported safely and secretly in and out of Los Alamos. They remember helping to acquire the lead-lined tanks used to transport scientists to the blast zone after the Trinity test. Allen and Van Gemert also discuss the dormitories at Los Alamos, how the Town Council handled problems, and the secrets of PO Box 1663. They recall their interactions with leading scientists including Emilio Segre, Enrico Fermi, and Edward Teller.Own this piece of history, from the dawn of the nuclear age!
