Quoted from source found on the internet:
After entering World War II, the U.S. Navy needed reliable chronometers for its expanding fleet. The U.S. Naval Observatory has issued a call for tenders to watchmakers to design and produce a high-quality chronometer that meets the requirements of the Navy. One of the most emblematic military watches of the period is the Model 22. Model 22 marine chronometers are renowned for their robustness and reliability. Every U.S. Navy ship had one or two marine chronometers.
